MDS RAI Training

Helping Your Home Ensure Accurate P3 Coding

Nurses working in long-term care value the major goals of rehabilitation. These values include:

  • To improve resident function
  • To promote resident independence
  • To promote resident life satisfaction
  • To preserve resident self-esteem

Rehabilitation nursing involves a dynamic, therapeutic and supportive relationship with the resident.  The nursing process is used to identify problems, set realistic, specific, measurable goals, implement interventions and evaluate effectiveness.

Section P3 of MDS recognizes the value of nursing rehabilitation in enabling residents to achieve their optimal level of functioning.  Nursing rehabilitation contributes to dignity, mastery and quality of life for each resident.

Why Offer Training?

P3 of the MDS records the amount of rehabilitation services a resident receives.  Basic nursing programs teach most of the procedures, however, further training is necessary to ensure that individual programs are understood and properly implemented.  The workplace must ensure that proper training for staff occurs.
