The pt Health Approach To Parkinson’s Disease

The pt Health Parkinson’s Rehabilitation program goes beyond medication and utilizes specialized therapy techniques to help residents move better and think clearer.  We take a unique interdisciplinary approach which combines skilled nursing, physiotherapy and occupational therapy to provide highly specific therapy for residents at various stage of the disease.

The most frequent targeted symptoms of Parkinson’s disease are gait function and postural instability. The pt Health physiotherapy team emphasizes repetitive exercises that work on strength, balance and flexibility which improves walking speed, stride length, activities of daily living and neurological signs.

Our occupational therapists enhance the lives of residents with Parkinson’s through safe transfer techniques, prescription and education on the use of assistive devices,  activities of daily living retraining and cognitive rehabilitation. To enhance the dining experience of residents with Parkinson’s disease, our rehabilitation tram also assist with establishing a successful restorative program tailored to address the symptoms and signs of Parkinson’s disease.

Our occupational therapists also evaluate swallowing and manage swallowing functions, and work collaboratively with the on-site dietician to improve safety during dining so residents can enjoy their meals.

At pt Health we recognize that each resident experiences Parkinson’s disease differently so we prepare individualized, goal-oriented treatment plans to best meet their needs. We also facilitate self-management strategies to maximize independence.  To provide support for caregivers, pt Health offers education to facility staff and family to better understand the disease process and strategies to improve resident’s overall quality of life.
